How Yoga and Cycling Fit Perfectly Together

At first glance the two don't seem to go together do they? Cycling can be so frenetic, and yoga so serene. Yet, yoga can enhance your cycling experience greatly.
I started cycling in 1992 with endurance rides in the Colorado Rockies. They typically covered anywhere from 68 miles on a single day ride to 700 miles on a multi-day event. Some of those miles were over 12,000-foot passes and others on the flat wide-open plains of eastern Colorado.
After a long ride I would most always pay for a massage to help eliminate the toxins, which had accumulated during the hours in the saddle. Having arrived home I would also stretch to stay limber and decrease soreness.
When I started practicing yoga a few years later I happily discovered unexpected benefits, which lent themselves to cycling very quickly and enhanced what I was already doing.
In yoga breathing is a vital part of every session. You learn to breath slowly, predictably and purposefully. This practice enables you to focus on the muscles being used, the balance required and the mental calmness needed to chase away the rest of the world for a few precious moments.
In cycling breathing correctly is a vital part of the ride. Does that sound familiar? When I saw how much my breathing during yoga changed how I performed, I knew instantly how it would affect my cycling. Learning to breathe during an endurance ride or a race is an important part of performing properly.
Yoga teaches us to breathe into the muscles being worked, relaxing and energizing them at the same time. When I am racing a time trial, which is a race against yourself and the clock, I have learned to apply these yoga principles to keep my breathing under control. Breathing deeply, slowly, and by mentally directing the oxygen and energy toward my legs, lower back, neck, or triceps I can reduce the pain and suffering and increase the effectiveness of racing techniques.
As I mentioned earlier, in Colorado we ride a lot in the mountains and they present a whole host of problems to a cyclist's body. We climb to absurd heights, descend at ridiculous speeds while covering hundreds of miles. As you might surmise, this takes enormous concentration.
Yoga provides the techniques to concentrate on the tasks at hand enabling the cyclist to push through pain, long hours on a skinny seat, breathe sufficiently in the thin oxygen and focus on narrow roads while descending.
During a yoga session we learn to balance on one foot with our arms extended over our head in the tree pose. Poses like this help you have real sense of your body, gain stability, strength, and a quiet focus on your physical condition. This all translates extremely well to cycling.
Consider combining the two, you may find the results to be worth the effort.

The Many Forms Of Yoga

Mention yoga and many people assume it is a uniform practice. In truth, there many different forms of yoga that can be practiced and each has a different approach.
What are the many different forms of yoga? To grasp them, you will first have to understand that some forms of yoga are more popular than others. For the sake of this article, we will be discussing the most popular forms of yoga, so that you may find these types at a local fitness club in your area. Those yoga classes that you are likely to come across include: Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Bikram.
Let's start with the one that is gaining a lot of attention lately: Bikram. Bikram yoga is also known as "hot yoga," and since its inception people have been yearning to learn these exercises. This movement was first begun by Bikram Choudhury many years ago with the intent that it would become an intense form of yoga. Bikram is done in an extremely hot room (usually 95 to 100 degrees), which helps to loosen tight muscles. In addition, the high heat will cause a person to sweat profusely (sweating cleanses the body). Usually, this class will contain around 10 poses, though some contain all 26 poses. Another popular form of yoga is Hatha, and you are sure to find this one near you as well.
Hatha is really quite a generalized term. Hatha encompasses many different forms of yoga, though a Hatha course will usually move at a slow pace. In many ways, Hatha is the best introductory yoga course. Also, you will find that Vinyasa is another form of yoga that beginners will enjoy due to the breath-synchronized movements and slow poses. In great contract to Hatha and Vinyasa is Iyengar ... though this type of yoga is closer to its true roots. What are the different types of yoga poses involved in Iyengar?
Iyengar is really based upon bodily alignment. Those that practice this form of yoga do so in order to hold various poses for long periods of time. There are also many props that will be used in an Iyengar course (blankets, blocks, straps), and these courses are highly addictive. As you can see, there are many sorts of yoga that you can easily take part in.

Yoga for Brides

Every bride wants to look trim, toned, and relaxed as she glides down the aisle in her beautiful wedding gown and pearl earrings. A great way to achieve all three? Yoga! With its unique combination of muscle-toning and stress-busting postures, many brides have found that yoga is the perfect form of exercise to prepare them for their weddings. Learn more about yoga for brides.
First of all, you should know that you do not have to be flexible or experienced to enjoy the benefits of pre-wedding yoga. Flexibility is something that you develop from practicing yoga, just as you develop strength from lifting weights or endurance from running. So never be afraid to try yoga, no matter what your current level of fitness or flexibility. As long as your doctor says you are healthy enough for exercise and you work with a qualified instructor, you will get all the benefits from yoga whether you are a beginner or experienced.
Many brides wear strapless wedding gowns with their pearl earrings, and toning their arms and shoulders can be a major concern. The classic yoga posture Downward Dog is excellent for developing slim muscles in those areas showcased by a strapless gown. A great thing about yoga is that you never have to worry about getting the bulky muscles which can come from weight lifting. Any poses in which you bear some of your body weight on your arms will help to tone that area, including postures like handstands (full expression or modified for beginners), Crow, or side angle. Even postures in which the arms are engaged in space will tone the biceps and triceps, like the Warrior poses.
Looking to trim your waist to look more slender in your wedding gown? There are many great yoga postures which can help. To get a firmer tummy, feel the burn with Boat pose. Many of the balancing postures like Eagle also require you to engage your core muscles to hold the pose. Unlike conventional sit ups or crunches, yoga has a number of poses which are effective at tightening the muscles down the sides of the waist. Holding a side bend will do wonders to whittle your waistline for your wedding. Side angle is great for slimming the sides of the waist as well.
Don't forget your back when you are trying to trim your waist. Losing the back part of a "muffin top" is a definite wedding "do". Any back bending poses will help tone up your back muscles. Good options include Cobra, Wheel, Bridge, and standing back bends like Dancer. Your teacher can help you adapt the back bends to be appropriate for your level of experience and flexibility. A healthy strong back also aids in creating a tall elegant posture - perfect for gliding down the aisle on your wedding day with a regal bearing.
Of course, you can always recognize a yogini by her "yoga bottom", so if losing the junk in your trunk is one of your pre-wedding fitness goals, you will find yoga to be very beneficial. Any of the postures which involve kicking your leg behind your body like floor Bow will firm, lift, and round your tush to get it in shape for a trumpet or sheath style bridal gown. And certainly any of the lunges are great to firm up your entire lower half. Best of all, not only will yoga help you look better in your wedding gown, it will help you achieve the serenity and radiance that all brides seek for their wedding day.

Repeat this sequence with the left ear to left shoulder.
Half-Circle Rolls
Drop your chin to your chest. Slowly roll it up to your right shoulder, down to center, up to the left shoulder and down to center. Repeat this three to five times. Never roll the head in a full circle, as this can cause damage.
Shoulder Hunches
Hunch your shoulders up as high as you can, then relax them completely. Repeat five to six times. Next roll your shoulders in forward circles five to six times, then backward circles five to six times. Notice how relaxed your shoulders feel. Try this quick relaxation exercise any time you feel tension building.
Chest Expander
Stand with your feet together and your fingers interlaced behind your back. Inhale while raising your hands behind your back, squeezing your shoulder blades together and tucking your tailbone under to keep from over-arching your back. Hold this position for three to four breaths, then lower your arms slowly during the next exhale.
Arm Lifts
Hold your arms straight out in front of you, parallel to the ground with palms facing each other but not touching. Inhale while bringing them up next to your head. Exhale while you bring them down again. Repeat this four to eight times.
Press It
Place either palm on the back of your head. Simultaneously press the head and hand against each other for a count of ten. Move the palm to the forehead and repeat the pressing for another count of ten. Now place the right palm against the right side of your head and press head and hand together for a count of ten. E - Eating Habits
In order to lose weight effectively, a well balanced diet plays the most important part. Once the muscles start building up, more fat gets burned during sessions.
H - Hydration
Staying hydrated is essential for Bikram Yoga, not just because you lose water excessively during hot yoga, but also because water is very important in burning fats and calories. So Many Different Yoga Styles, But Which One Is Right For You?

You might be surprised to learn that there isn't one style of yoga practice so you'll need to learn some more about the different styles in order to decide which one is right for you. In this article we'll take a closer look at four practice styles: hatha yoga, vinyasa, ashtanga and power yoga to help you on the way to your decision.

1. Hatha yoga

Hatha yoga is often used interchangeably with the word yoga and classes are usually slow-paced involving stretching, some simple breathing exercises and some seated meditations. If you are a beginner then this is a good place to start so that you can spend time learning the basic techniques.

If you are looking for a calming and relaxing experience then hatha yoga is probably right for you. If you'd prefer something more energetic then you should consider vinyasa instead.

2. Vinyasa

Vinyasa means breath-synchonised movement and in these classes the teacher will ask you to move from one pose to another in time with your breath. The poses all flow together in a fluid movement.

Vinyasa classes offer a lot of variety due to the vast number of poses, although most will include the Sun Salutations. The speed of the movements is very much dictated by the teacher, so if you find that a class is too fast for you look for a different teacher. In order to appreciate vinyasa you need to have a teacher that you are comfortable with as their style will shape the class, keep looking until you find someone you connect with.

3. Ashtanga

Ashtanga is a series of poses which realign the spine, detoxify the body and build strength, stamina and flexibility. There are 75 poses in all and they can take anywhere between an hour and a half to two hours to complete. You start with sun salutations and then move to standing poses, seated poses, inversions and backbends before finishing with relaxation.

You can learn ashtanga at a teacher-led class, and then when you are happy with the order of the poses you can either practice on your own or in a mysore class where you practice at your own pace but have a teacher for guidance.

Ashtanga is a very athletic form of practice and is very popular. If you like a sense of order then this style will appeal to you.

4. Power yoga

Power yoga is often used to describe vigorous, fitness-style classes, which are based on ashtanga but don't follow the same series of poses each time. The classes focus on strength and flexibility and are popular in gyms and health clubs.

If you already quite fit and enjoy exercise rather than meditation then this style of yoga may appeal to you.

There are many different styles of yoga practice from the slow meditative style of hatha yoga through to the structured approach of ashtanga and the vigorous but often changing power yoga. Start out with a class suitable for beginners to that you can learn the poses and then move onto the style of yoga that suits you best in order to benefit from this wonderful form of exercise.

You'll have time to yourself to focus on you and to forget your responsibilities.

One side effect of yoga is enhanced creativity and improved concentration. If you think that you are too busy to set aside half an hour for a yoga session then you should give it a try. You'll be even more productive afterwards and will achieve more in less time.

Benefits of Yoga and Health Benefits of Yoga

Over the past several years, yoga has experienced an upsurge in popularity in the western world among medical professionals and celebrities alike. While much associate yoga with new age mysticism or the latest fad at the gym, yoga is actually an ancient practice that connects the mind, body, and spirit through body poses, controlled breathing, and meditation. The practice of yoga has many health benefits associated with it, so read below to discover benefits of incorporating yoga in to your or your patient's fitness program.

Health Benefits Within

From lowering blood pressure to increasing pain tolerance, the following health benefits can all be discovered within the body.

1.    Blood pressure. A consistent yoga practice decreases blood pressure through better circulation and oxygenation of the body. These two exercises can help lower blood pressure.

2.    Pulse rate. A slower pulse rate indicates that your heart is strong enough to pump more blood with fewer beats. Regularly practicing yoga provides a lower pulse rate.

3.    Circulation. Yoga improves blood circulation. By transporting nutrients and oxygen throughout your body, yoga practice provides healthier organs, skin, and brain.

4.    Respiratory. Like the circulatory system, a lower respiratory rate indicates that the lungs are working more efficiently. Yoga decreases the respiratory rate through a combination of controlled breathing exercises and better fitness.

5.    Cardiovascular endurance. A combination of lower heart rate and improved oxygenation to the body (both benefits of yoga) results in higher cardiovascular endurance.

6.    Gastrointestinal. Gastrointestinal functions have been shown to improve in both men and women who practice yoga.

7.    Immunity. Yoga practice has frequently been correlated with a stronger immune system. Read this article for more on the immune system and yoga, including some poses that specifically work on areas of immunity.

8.    Pain. Pain tolerance is much higher among those who practice yoga regularly. In addition to pain tolerance, some instances of chronic pain, such as back pain, are lessened or eliminated through yoga (see below for more on back pain).

Disease Prevention

Doctors and nurses love yoga because studies indicate that it can help prevent the following diseases.

1.    Heart disease. Yoga reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, keeps off weight, and improves cardiovascular health, all of which lead to reducing your risk of heart disease.

2.    Osteoporosis. It is well documented that weight-bearing exercise strengthens bones and helps prevent osteoporosis. Additionally, yoga's ability to lower levels of cortisol may help keep calcium in the bones.

3.    Type II diabetes. In addition to the glucose reducing capabilities of yoga, it is also an excellent source of physical exercise and stress reduction that, along with the potential for yoga to encourage insulin production in the pancreas, can serve as an excellent preventative for type II diabetes.

Exercise Health Benefits

As a form of exercise, yoga offers benefits that are sometimes not easily found among other exercise regimens. Check out these reasons to include yoga in your or your patient's health program.

1.    Low risk of injury. Due to the low impact of yoga and the controlled aspect of the motions, there is a very low risk of injury during yoga practice compared to other forms of exercise.

2.    Muscle tone. Consistently practicing yoga leads to better muscle tone.

3.    Subcortex. Subcortical regions of brain are associated with well-being, and yoga is thought to dominate the subcortex rather than the cortex (where most exercise dominates).

4.    Reduced oxygen consumption. Yoga consumes less oxygen than traditional exercise routines, thereby allowing the body to work more efficiently.

5.    Breathing. With yoga, breathing is more natural and controlled during exercise. This type of breathing provides more oxygen-rich air for your body and also provides more energy with less fatigue.

6.    Joint range of motion. A study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine indicated that joint range of motion was improved by participants who practiced yoga.

7.    Eye-hand coordination. Without practice, eye-hand coordination diminishes. Yoga maintains and improves eye-hand coordination.

8.    Dexterity. The strong mind-body connection and flexibility gained from yoga leads to grace and skill.

9.    Endurance. Working the entire body, yoga improves endurance and is frequently used by endurance athletes as a supplement to their sport-specific training.

10.    Depth perception. Becoming aware of your body and how it moves, as one does in yoga practice, leads to increased depth perception.

Yoga Can Add A New Dimension To Weight Loss Efforts

In the fight to lose weight, Americans have turned to a variety of extreme methods, including over-the-top exercise routines, fad diets and even harmful fasting. And thanks to these extreme methods, pseudo doctors and TV hawkers have become rich while unsatisfied dieters look for the next weight loss answer.

By searching for easy solutions, many weight conscious people are ignoring one of most effective weight loss methods available - yoga.

Many people may not associate yoga with effective weight loss. Thanks to late night TV ads and self-described weight loss experts, a lot of us have been led to believe that strenuous exercise routines are the only way to effectively get in shape and "feel the burn". They try to tell unsuspecting people products such as pills, powders, creams and outrageous diets can help them lose the weight but only succeed in helping them lose money.

To be sure, diet and exercise have an important role in weight loss. Yoga, however, is an often untapped resource in the exercise regimen that has the real potential to help you lose weight. Not all forms of yoga are useful in helping you lose weight, however, because some lack the movements that can raise the heart rate and get the calories burning in a manner that facilitates weight loss. But there are forms of yoga than can get you close to these levels and (when combined with other forms of exercise) can create a workout regimen that can help you shed pounds and keep them off.

Also, it's possible to yoga as your primary form of exercise with the goal of losing weight. But to do this, you must engage in a yoga class of at least 90 minutes that includes movements and positions that can raise your heart rate to fat-burning levels at least three days a week. And when you combine this type of yoga exercise with other types of aerobic workouts like running or brisk walking, you not only lose weight but get stronger as well.

So how can you lose weight with yoga? Well, the most strenuous forms of yoga includes a fairly rapid series of movements that not only tone the muscles but can raise the heart rate and help the practitioner work up a pretty good sweat. Studies have show that yoga not only lowers the stress levels but helps increase insulin sensitivity, which delivers a signal to your body to use the food you eat as fuel and not simply store it as fat. In addition, yoga experts point to the way yoga can improve digestion (and thus reduce the likelihood of water retention, bloating and constipation) and improve the circulation of blood to the glands that control appetite as more evidence that it can aid in weight loss.

For the most effective weight loss through yoga, you need to participate in vinyasa or "flow yoga", which incorporates the series of poses known as sun salutations. In vinyasa yoga, there are subsets of yoga that incorporate a number of strength-building poses that require you to exert yourself. Among the vinyasa yoga styles are: Ashtanga yoga, a style of yoga that emphasizes synchronized breathing and postures that elevate the heart rate and help create a detoxifying sweat.

Power yoga, a strenuous form of yoga closely related to the Ashtanga form and stressing strength and flexibility. Created in the U.S. in the early 1990s, power yoga is credited with bringing yoga to the body building gyms of America.

Yoga instructors also stress several specific positions that are beneficial to weight loss. Included in this group is: The Cresent: From a standing position, inhale and raise your arms overhead, with your fingertips pointed toward the ceiling. Bend forward at the waist while you exhale and bring your hand to the ground. Breathe in then exhale as you take a step back with your right left into a lunge position (left knee bent and over your ankle while the right leg rests on the ball of your foot). Inhale and lift your arms overhead and look straight ahead. Hold the pose and then return to a standing position, then perform the move again, this time for the opposite side of your body.

The Willow: Stand with your feet together and your arms at your sides. Place the bottom of your left foot on the inside of your right thigh, with your knee bent and pointed to the side. Bring your palms together in front of your chest and breath deeply two times. As you inhale a third time, lift your arms over your head with your fingers pointed to the sky. Exhale and inhale again, this time while bending your midsection to the left. Inhale as your straighten up and then repeat the movement. Now perform the movement for the other side of your body.

Rocking Boat: Sit on the floor, bend your knees and place your feet on the floor while resting your hands on your thighs. Lean back 45 degrees and lift your feet off the floor so that the lower part of your leg is in line with the floor and your toes are pointed ahead. Inhale and extend your arms and legs (keep your legs together), forming a V shape. Exhale, then inhale and lower your torso and legs a few inches so that they form an even wider V. Exhale and raise your torso and legs again. Perform this position between 3 and 5 times.

Hover: Get into a position similar to a push up, with your feet resting on your toes and your arms straight. Make sure your hands are below your shoulders and your body is in line. As you exhale, lower your chest to the floor, making sure to keep your elbows bent and your arms tight to the side of your body. Tighten your abs and hold the position a few inches above the floor.

Chair: Stand with feet together and pointed forward, arms at your side. Take a breath and raise your arms over your head, making sure the palm of your hands are facing. Exhale and lower yourself into a seated position (about 45 degrees), with your knees behind your toes and your abs tight.

When combined with proper nutrition and a regular schedule, yoga can be a welcome addition to your weight loss program. If you are already a member of a yoga class, speak with your instructor to learn what types of yoga can help you lose weight.
